Getting Started

Getting started with your smart home is simple with Smart AV Solutions.

A smart home consists of interconnected smart devices that help you control various aspects of your home. These devices can be broadly categorized into five main areas.

  1. Smart Lighting
  2. Smart Appliances
  3. Smart Curtains and Blinds
  4. Home Security and Monitoring
  5. Automation and Remote Controls

Getting started with a smart home means beginning with one of these options. This guide explains each category and the necessary products and packages you’ll need to achieve a smart home.

1. Smart Lighting

Smart lighting is the simplest and most effective way to create a smart home. Lights are essential in our homes, and we use them every day. Making your lights smart is a natural first step toward creating a smart home.

Smart Lighting can be further subdivided into two categories – Smart Switches, and Smart Lights.

Smart Switches

You can control your lights remotely and automatically. In addition to using a switch to turn your lights on and off, you’ll also have the ability to manage them through your smart home system.

When using smart switches with standard lights, you can only control them in terms of turning them on and off. These switches do not provide options for dimming or other adjustments.

Smart lights

allow you to control brightness, colors, and color temperatures (warm whites or cool whites), giving you a wide range of options for various scenes.

You have a few options to consider:

1. Smart Lights combined with Smart Switches
2. Normal Lights combined with Smart Switches
3. A mix of Smart Lights and Normal Lights combined with Smart Switches

Please note that we do not recommend using smart lights without smart switches. When a normal switch is turned off, it cuts power to the smart light, causing it to go offline and become unresponsive to your apps and automation.

Smart Lights and Smart Switches
Our smart home system allows you to control your smart lights with smart switches. By pressing the smart switch, you can send a wireless command to turn the lights on and off, all without cutting off the electrical power to them.

1.1 Smart Switches

If you want to make your regular lights smarter, our Smart Switches are the perfect solution. These smart switches replace your existing light switches. In the past, you would manually flip the switch to turn the lights on and off. Now, smart switches can electronically perform this function on their own! They connect wirelessly to other smart devices and to your phone, allowing you to control your lighting through your smart home system. When you send a command from your phone, the smart switch will electronically turn the lights on or off.

1.2 Smart Lights

Smart lights offer enhanced flexibility and control, allowing you to adjust brightness and color temperatures. Each light functions as an individual device within your smart home system, providing you with precise control. Additionally, lights can be grouped for convenient management.

Using smart lights, you can create “scenes,” which are preconfigured sets of instructions for a group of smart devices. Setting up scenes is a one-time process, and afterward, activating them can be done with a single command. Common scenes to create include daytime scenes, evening scenes, night scenes, and all-off scenes. In each scene, you can adjust the brightness and warmth of every light to create the desired atmosphere.

With these smart lighting scenes, it becomes simple to ensure that your home is illuminated in the most comfortable way at different times.

2. Smart Appliances

Air-conditioners and fans are something else we use everyday in Sunny Singapore. Having smart AC and fan control means greater convenience, reduced energy usage, and better cost savings. With these appliances integrated into your smart home, you’ll be able to automate your appliances (e.g. turn off AC when it’s 26C), and remotely control them.
Our aircon controllers have an infrared (IR) emitter which can be set up to send commands to your air-conditioners and fans. These are the same commands that are beamed by your remote controls. Being connected to your smart home system and your phone, you’ll be able to use smart technologies even with your existing appliances.

It also works other appliances, such as TVs and air purifiers.

3. Smart Curtains and Blinds

Installing motorized and automated curtains and blinds may seem like a significant commitment and effort, but the benefits are truly worth it. For instance, setting your curtains to automatically open at 7 a.m. can help fill your home with sunlight just as you’re waking up, warming your space and helping you start your day on a positive note. Similarly, having your blinds close automatically in the evening provides privacy and signals a time to unwind.

Additionally, who doesn’t appreciate a little mechanical assistance with everyday tasks? Watching your curtains draw themselves or your blinds raise at the touch of a button can be quite enjoyable. You can even incorporate these features into a scene, such as a “Movie Time” scene, which can be activated with a voice command to Siri or Google. The result is not only convenient but also quite satisfying.

4. Home Monitoring and Security

With a well-connected smart home, you can stay informed about your home, even when you’re away. Stream live video footage from our selection of home monitoring cameras to see what’s happening, or review recorded footage stored in the cloud. Sensors can alert you if windows are opened or if motion is detected in your garden. Many of our hubs can be set up as security systems, sounding an 80 dB alarm when triggered—such as when your door is opened while you’re not at home.

Our smart door locks go beyond traditional digital locks; they can be fully integrated into your smart home system. You can access logs of when your door was unlocked and by whom, and receive notifications if your door has been left ajar. Set up automation, such as arming your security system when the door is locked. The most innovative aspect of our locks is biometric access, which is much more secure than using a key and can be unlocked in as little as 0.8 seconds.

5. Automations and Remote Controls

At Smart AV Solutions, controlling your home starts with your smartphone. Once set up, you can manage your lights and appliances remotely, even when you’re not at home. Additionally, our Aqara Wireless Mini Switch can be configured as a dedicated button for specific lights, such as your bedroom light, conveniently placed on your bedside table for easy access.

For a more flexible, hands-free experience, our products are fully compatible with voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa.

But why stop there? You can create a smart home that requires minimal manual control by utilizing automation features. Equip your home with our affordable array of smart sensors from Smart AV Solutions, enabling sensor-based automations. For example, motion sensors can automatically turn your lights on, while a combination of temperature and motion sensors can activate your air conditioning only when it’s hot, and you’re present in the room.
